Biography:
Dr. John is a board-certified Family Physician who specializes in medical care for the entire family and believes in having a long-term relationship with your Family Doctor. He cares for everyone from newborns to the elderly, and rounds every day at hospitalized patients at Wiregrass Medical Center, where he also performs surgical procedures and endoscopy every morning.
Dr. John graduated cum laude with a B.A. in biology from Harvard University in 2002, where he was also on the Dean's List and played football. He graduated in 2006 from UAB Medical School in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was president of his class and president of the Family Medicine Interest Group. He graduated in 2009 from Texas A&M Family Medicine Residency, where he was named both the Outstanding Intern and the Outstanding Third-Year Resident, and received the Academic Achievement Award for the highest score in the residency on his certification examinations. He was named a Texas Super Doctor in 2012, 2013, and 2014.
Dr. John has a passion for teaching medical students and residents, and was recognized as the Outstanding Teaching Resident by Texas A&M Medical School in 2007. He worked full-time as a faculty physician at Texas A&M Family Medicine Residency from 2009-2015, where he also served as Chairman of the Admission Committee, Director of the Advanced Obstetrical Track, and Director of Clinical Procedures. During that time he was also an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at both Texas A&M Medical School and the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was named outstanding Faculty Member by the residents in 2010 and 2012, and outstanding Family Medicine Preceptor by the medical students in 2011.
Dr. John has a passion to serve, having worked as a medical missionary many times in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. He has volunteered as a medical expert and speaker countless times for various media and civic organizations, as an admissions interviewer for Harvard University and Texas A&M Medical School, and as a staff physician for multiple free medical clinics. He is fluent in Spanish. As a former four-sport athlete and overall state winner of the Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete award in 1998, Dr. John is heavily involved in the recreational and school athletics of our community, and serves as the Team Doctor for the high school football team.
Dr. John and his wife Dr. Vivian Simmons (a Family Physician in Hartford, AL) have traveled the world with their four children: Jack, Sawyer, Sadie, and Lila Jo. Their combined interests include hunting, fishing, cooking, gardening, beekeeping, and playing musical instruments. His most important Bible verse as a doctor, husband, and father is from Luke 12:48: To whom much is given, of him much shall be required. And from him to whom much was entrusted, much will be asked.
